The university’s infrastructure was remarkable for its time, boasting expansive libraries known as "Dharmaganja," which housed thousands of manuscripts and texts. The most prominent among these libraries were Ratnasagara (Ocean of Jewels), Ratnodadhi (Sea of Jewels), and Ratnaranjaka (Jewel-adorned). Decline and Destruction

The decline of Nalanda began in the 12th century, coinciding with political instability in the region. The university suffered its final blow in 1193 CE when it was ransacked and destroyed by Turkish Muslim invaders led by Bakhtiyar Khilji. This marked the end of a glorious era of scholarship and left Nalanda in ruins for centuries.

Modern Revival

Rebirth of Nalanda University

The concept of reviving Nalanda University gained momentum in the early 21st century, driven by the vision to resurrect a historic institution that symbolized a global exchange of knowledge. In 2006, the Government of India initiated efforts to rebuild Nalanda University as an international center for learning, and in 2010, the Nalanda University Act was passed by the Indian Parliament, formally establishing the modern university.

Located near the ruins of the ancient university, the new Nalanda University commenced its first academic session in September 2014 with postgraduate programs in disciplines such as History, Ecology and Environment Studies, and Buddhist Studies, Philosophy, and Comparative Religions. The modern campus, designed to be eco-friendly and technologically advanced, reflects the university’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

The revived Nalanda University aims to foster an interdisciplinary approach to learning, drawing from the rich heritage of its predecessor while addressing contemporary global challenges.
